The University of Pisa was officially established in 1343, when it was proclaimed a ‘Studium Generale’ with the authority to prepare university teachers, although its origins date back to earlier centuries. The University also counts several Nobel Prize winners among its alumni, including Giosuè Carducci (Literature), Enrico Fermi (Physics) and Carlo Rubbia (Physics), and a Fields medalist, Enrico Bombieri (Mathematics).

Today the University of Pisa is a modern centre of teaching and advanced research composed of 20 departments. It offers 59 undergraduate and 76 postgraduate degree programs, in all the main areas of knowledge and advanced professional education. The University has 19 doctoral programs, four of which co-funded by the Regional Government of Tuscany; it also offers 68 third cycle specialisation programs, and more than 100 special shorter programs of further education, including an MBA. Today the University of Pisa is engaged in a strategy of internationalisation aimed at attracting students and researchers from all parts of the world and at establishing long-term partnerships with universities, public and private institutions in various areas of the globe.
